What you'll actually pay

Dutch side (Sint Maarten)
Prices in US dollars nearly everywhere. Official currency is the Caribbean guilder (XCG, replaced the NAf in 2025), pegged at 1.79 per dollar. Change may come back in guilders at supermarkets and government offices.
French side (Saint-Martin)
Official currency is the euro. Most restaurants and shops in Marigot, Grand Case and Orient Bay take dollars — many at 1 € = 1 $, which is a discount for you when the euro is above parity. Ask before you order; card payments are charged in euros.
ATMs
Dutch-side ATMs give USD (sometimes XCG); French-side ATMs give euros. Bank ATMs beat the standalone ones on fees. Banks & ATMs with line reports →
Tipping
Dutch side: 15% is normal, check if service is already on the bill (often 15% added). French side: service is included by law; round up or leave a few euros.
